As a painter, printmaker and poet, William Blake (1757–1827) was
responsible for some of the most inspiring and original images
in British art. Some 300 of the artist’s distinctive watercolours,
paintings and prints have been gathered by Tate Britain for what
is to be the largest show of his work for 20 years. The exhibition
will recreate the room above his family’s hosiery shop in which
Blake displayed his art in 1809; the venture was not a success and
Blake's genius was not recognised in his lifetime. The exhibition
seeks to rectify this, utilising 21st-century technology to realise
the artist’s grand ambitions of showing his work at enormous
scale. William Blake runs from 11 September until 2 February.
