Best wishes to Larne FC

How long have you been a Larne FC fan?
My late father took me to my first match back in 1969, so I suppose
that makes it 50 years. The first match I can remember being at was
the final game of the 1972/3 season, when recently crowned league
champions Crusaders beat us 5-2 at Inver Park. I was gutted that we
got beaten and I was only eight. That was the start of it I suppose.

What has been your most memorable moment as a Larne FC fan?
Undoubtedly when we won the Ulster Cup by beating Coleraine at
The Oval in September 1987. I’ve seen Larne lose eight cup finals
over the years, so that night was something special. Hanging on to a
2-1 half time lead, the second half seemed to last for hours! Winning
promotion last season was a bit special too though.

What are your predictions for
the season ahead?
It’s a big step up from the
Championship to the Premier
League and we’re under no
illusions that it’s going to be
tough. The club has made
some great signings in the
summer to bolster the squad.
We played five Premier
League teams last season in
cup competitions, winning two
and losing the others narrowly,
two of which were after extra
time. So I would expect us to
be pushing for the top 4, or
thereabouts.

If you could choose any footballer to join Larne FC who would it
be?
That is a tough question. If Lionel Messi ever became available, I’d
have him, but I’m not sure he would get a place at the moment.

What makes Larne FC unique?
Larne is unique, there is no place like it. It’s a nation in its own right!
Larne FC has always been a family club. The town is absolutely
buzzing at the moment. Everybody is talking about the football team.
Even my 86-year-old mum tunes in to Final Score on a Saturday
afternoon. What Kenny Bruce and his team have done over the past
two years in bringing a town together, is nothing short of astonishing.
Before every home game I sit in Riverdale car park and take 10
minutes to watch the stream of young kids walking up the Inver Road
to the ground with their dads and grandads etc, all wearing their
Larne shirts, hats and scarves. A few years ago this would have been
unthinkable. Also, I’m constantly amazed by the number of (non-
Larne born) ex players who come regularly to matches. Many have
played for countless other Irish League clubs but say that the happiest
days of their career were spent at Larne. That says it all really.
