The Mayor of Mid and East Antrim has congratulated Brighter Whitehead after the group were
winners of The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS). The QAVS is the highest award given
to volunteer groups across the UK. Now in its 17th year, the QAVS has received more than 500
nominations from across UK, with just over 280 groups receiving the award – 22 of which are in
Northern Ireland.
Mayor Maureen Morrow, said: “Congratulations to Brighter Whitehead on being awarded the
Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. This is deserved recognition of the excellent work this group
does within the community and it is fitting they have received such a prestigious honour.”
The group was also personally congratulated by the former Lord-Lieutenant for County Antrim, Mrs
Joan Christie CVO, OBE, on one of her last engagements in the role after 11 years in office.
As well as horticulture, Brighter Whitehead have been champions of
biodiversity, sustainability and community involvement over the years.
Whitehead has competed in Ulster in Bloom every year since 1995
and has represented Northern Ireland at the RHS Britain in Bloom
competition 12 times, having great success at both.
