st mary’s

football club

St. Mary’s Football Club was founded by a group of parents in
Glengormley, Newtownabbey. It all began in the year 1996, with just
one team. Amongst those who formed the club was current club
president Frank Wilson who has been the driving force behind it ever
since.
It all began as a local football club centred around the St. Mary’s
Parish in Glengormley. As Glengormley and the St. Mary’s Parish
was getting bigger the demand for a home club from Glengormley
was greatly needed as many local players were finding themselves
travelling to play football. St. Mary’s Football Club has grown vastly
from 1996, attracting players from not only the Greater Glengormley
area but also north Belfast and as far out of Belfast as Ballyclare.
All those who have been involved in the club from day one, have
contributed to its growth and popularity.
As a charity, the club depends hugely on its large number of
volunteers who help out in many ways possible. In the club’s infancy
the small amount of volunteers took on roles as not only coaches,
but also as bursars and secretaries in order to keep the club running
smoothly both financially and to keep on top of fixtures etc.
