The Crown and Shamrock is a family run pub in the
Newtownabbey area. It has been in the same family since
1930, when it was purchased by Neil John O’Boyle and has
been run as a free house ever since. It first opened in 1872
as Ballvesay stores, a stop for weary travellers on the Antrim
line. In 1901 it was renamed the Crown and Shamrock Inn
by Joseph Bigger. A historic blue plaque is situated on the
building to commemorate him as an antiquary and Celtic
revivalist. He opened the first premises of the Ulster public
house association.
The new owners have kept the bar untouched. On entering
the bar you feel as though you have walked back in time. The
facilities have been updated, with a new beer garden and
O’Boyles back bar, showcasing the history of this amazing
pub. With a wide and varied new drinks range, all live sports
matches, new toilets and traditional Irish and acoustic music
every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday it is well worth a visit.
Private parties are catered for and there is a pub quiz once a
month. Everyone is welcome and a great night is guaranteed.
