ven if you are not a
fan of golf you can’t
have failed to be
impressed by the fact
that the 148th Open
came to Royal Portrush.
It must surely be one of
the biggest global events
ever to come to the
island of Ireland. Given
our size, global sporting
events normally pass us by and we have to
make do with watching them on television. So,
it was extra special to be able to watch such
a massive event happening on our doorstep.
Even though, as usual, the weather was a bit iffy,
it didn’t take away from the fact that the eyes

quiet corner of Northern Ireland. In terms of the
immediate impact on the economy the numbers

are pretty impressive. Over the course of the
weekend around 237,750 spectators visited and
there should be whopping £80 million boost
to the economy. Although it is hard to gauge

be equally as impressive. The weekend ended
perfectly with Co. Offaly’s Shane Lowry’s
superb victory, ably aided and abetted by his
caddy, Ardglass man Bo Martin. Well done to
all involved. Turn to page 160 of this issue for
extensive coverage of the big weekend.
