GoodHomes India – August 2019

(Tina Sui) #1
olkata based developer, insisted
n urban oasis in stark contrast
g nature of the city: an antidote
to the chaos outside. The
family’s requirements were
fairly simple — to create
a contemporary space
tempered with traditional
sensibilities. For architect
Sahil Jain, it meant treading
a fine balance between a
modern and traditional
aesthetic, and curating
an amalgamation of both
the styles.
The house revolves
around a central courtyard,
encapsulated by passages
on all sides. “The intent was
to let all the spaces flow into
each other. Inter-connectivity
is one of the highlights of the
house,” informs Sahil. The
material palette — wood,
stone and glass — lends itself
beautifully to the modern
aesthetic. Wood however
takes on the dominant role,
playing the protagonist, while
glass plays a worthy partner.
The abundance of greens,
in the central courtyard,
and around the house
in combination with the material palette
enhances the tropical vibe of this spacious
residence.
Spread across three levels, the ground
floor being the recreational zone, the house
opens itself up on the first floor as the soaring
double height courtyard dominates the space,
creating a stunning play of light and shadow
throughout the day. It is a modernist retreat
indeed.

The warm and cool contrasts that define

the aesthetic of the courtyard bleed into the

informal living spaces as well, allowing the

transitions between these spaces to be fluid

andnatural.

(BELOW) The den melds
into the formal living
area, as the wooden
partitions slide to one
side, effectively opening
up the floor for bigger
gatherings right up to
the pool at the far end.
