quaintfarmhouse,designed by Aamir and
HameedaSharmaofHyderabad based
Aandh,is resplendent in its humble beauty.
“The ownerswantedto develop
this land into a getaway home
where they could also pursue
their interest in organic
farming,” explains Hameeda.
The family of four had simple
requirements from this space —
four bedrooms, spa, courtyard,
ventilation and privacy from
prying eyes. Keeping this brief
in mind, the architects decided
to build a traditional courtyard
house with rooms that opened
up towards a central square.
This aangan is a key area of
the house as it connects all the
rooms, lends the interiors a
spacious feel and is the central
point where the family comes
together to spend their evenings.
The colour and material
palettes were kept natural
and simple. Kerala roof tiles
were paired with traditional
Athangudi ones, while Tandoor
stones were used in the exterior
areas. High-ceilings were
built to scale up the structure,
allowing use of full length glass windows that
opened up interior spaces to the gorgeous
vistas outside. “A major detail is the set of
traditional concrete pillars supporting the
entire structure,” Hameeda points out.
Since the bungalow sits in an open field,
it was imperative to protect it from the sun.
For this, the architects built an eight-foot
sloping terracotta roof. As a good measure,
they’ve also planted trees that will grow to
provide shade as well as cool the house. We
love how the home embraces its rooted-ness
and makes the most of nature’s bounty!L

serve as a space

entertain his office
staff. The courtyard
plays a central role in
this as it serves as the
main breakout area.I like experimenting with different interior
styles, throwing them together to see how they
co-exist. It’s important to use the right mix of
colours that co-ordinate with soft furnishings.
