Lemons
AT OUR
Lemons are one of the most versatile fruits. Lemon juice adds delicious
flavour to savoury dishes (like fish, seafood, chicken, lamb, sauces, salad
dressings and marinades), sweet dishes (like lemon meringue pie, lemon
curd, lemon poppy cake and tarts) and drinks (like lemonade, tea, sugar
syrups and lemon liqueur). Lemon juice is also used as a short-term
preservative because the acid denatures the enzymes that cause fruits
like apples, bananas and avocados to oxidise (turn brown after slicing).
Lemon skin can be used to make marmalade and garnish cocktails.
Finely zested, it can be added to baked goods, rice, flavoured butter or
wherever you want a zesty taste without the sourness. To release the
maximum amount of juice, roll lemons on a counter or microwave them
for 15-30 seconds before slicing and squeezing. They’re a good source of
vitamin C that’s needed to produce collagen. They may also help relieve
asthma symptoms and protect against cancer. In addition, lemons can
be used as a chemical-free cleaner to remove grease, bleach stains, as a
disinfectant and to remove odours.
There’ll be no more unwanted
pips in your salad, soup, stew or
smoothie with the new LemonGold®
lemon. Another bonus is that they’re
so juicy! From R37.99 for a pack of
six to eight from Woolworths.
