Empathy is an important social
skill and part of what makes us human.
Being sympathetic to the plight of the
underprivileged, the sick or the elderly
are all examples of empathy, but it can
result in feelings of utter helplessness
and hopelessness. Striking a balance
between caring about others and
safeguarding your own mental health
can be a challenge. Our feature on
page 84 offers valuable insights into
thisimportantareaofmentalhealth.
If you’re parenting a teen,
holding onto the reins is sometimes
impossible. How do you juggle
raising an independent adult with
maintaining the boundaries you set so
painstakingly in early childhood? Our
guide on page 76 is one all parents
should keep – particularly if your
parenting approach is different from
your partner’s. After all, you were
raised by completely different people:
it stands to reason you may prefer
different methods when it comes to
discipline. Better communication,
writes Nolwazi Dhlamini on page 82, is
just the beginning.
We hope this issue puts a spring in
your step. Please share your feedback
with us – we love getting your emails
every month.
