MEAL PLANNING AND APPS
Make sure they eat a
well-balanced diet rich in
wholesome foods. It’s crucial
to monitor their intake of
refined carbohydrates and
understand the way fibre and
sugar alcohols can affect their
blood glucose levels. Avoiding
processed and sweetened
foods is equally important.
Teach your child which types
of food they can eat at an early
age and, once they’re older,
instruct them in using apps that
help with monitoring glucose
levels, food intake, medication
doses, symptoms, and kilojoule
and carbohydrate intake. The
apps also provide recipes
and interesting
educational
articles. Diabetes:
M is available on
Android and iOS.

SCHOOL PLAN
Ensure the school’s teachers, class
assistants, sports and extramural
coaches know about your child’s
condition and understand the
potential problems and needs
of kids with type 1 diabetes. If
your child’s very young, enquire
whether a school nurse or their
class teacher can help them check
their blood glucose and inject
insulin. Once they’re older, they can
learn to do this themselves. You
should also get them a medical
alert bracelet or necklace to wear
atalltimes.
MEDICATION
Get your child’s chronic medication
delivered to your home by your
local pharmacy. Medipost and
Dis-Chem, as well as most medical
aid schemes, offer this service. It’s
convenient and you never have to
stress about forgetting to fetch the
next round of prescriptions.
