Lithium rechargeable batteries

Lithium battery technology has been around for many years and come in primary

(one-time use) and secondary (rechargeable) types. The rechargeable Lithium battery

family is collectively referred to as Lithium-ion (Li-ion). There are many different types of

Li-ion rechargeable batteries, all use Lithium as the base cathode (negative terminal)

material combined with another substance, and carbon for the anode (positive terminal).

For example, a common type of Li-ion battery is the Lithium Iron Phosphate, referred to as

LiFePO4, or Li-Po. The energy density of Li-ion batteries is much higher than other battery

technologies, for instance a 1Kg Li-ion battery can store about 150WH, compared to 25WH for

a lead-acid battery.

The cell voltage of Li-ion batteries is also higher than that of competing technologies, for example

a Li-ion cell will typically have a cell voltage of 3.7V, compared to 1.2V for a typical Zinc-Carbon

or Alkaline cell. This means fewer cells are required when using Li-ion technology. This makes Li-ion

batteries ideal for portable power sources, mobile phones, laptop computers, and even electric cars.
