In focus: fleet development, ATR 42/72 vs De Havilland Canada Dash 8-400

The ATR 42/72 family and Dash 8-400 are the
main commercial turboprops in the sector.
At the start of June, Bombardier sold the
Dash 8 line to British Columbia’s Longview
Aviation Capital, which placed the pro-
gramme into the newly formed De Havilland
Aircraft of Canada. The new holding compa-
ny inherits a backlog that stands at 49 former
Q400s, according to Cirium’s Fleets Analyzer.
A total of 260 ATRs are currently on order,
including 208 of the larger ATR 72 variant.
The global fleet of ATR-family aircraft has
risen from just under 800 units in July 2010 to
over 1,200 today. The number of Dash 8-400s
rose from almost 300 to 500 over the period.
A total of 7% of Dash 8-400 aircraft are
currently parked: the same ratio as in 2010.
ATR’s highest parked ratio was 17% in July
2018, and averaged 13% in the study period. ■
