herboyfriend’splanswithoutherselfendingup
injail.Marisadrinksbarbiturate-spiked
gazpachomeantforIvánandrethinksherentire
life,whileCarlosdevelopsa puppy-likecrush
onthepreoccupiedCandela.It allbecomes
occasionallysurreal—thesamemambo-themed
cabpullsupeverytimePepaneedsa ride,and
ourheroinekeepschickensandducksonthe
balconyofherchicpenthouse—and
surprisinglymelancholy.Iván,whois heardbut
rarelyonscreen,pullsstringsandshapeslives
liketheunseenCharlieofCharlie’sAngels. He’s

therewasnowaythattherelativelyyoungand
untriedfilmmakercouldaffordit.Instead,he
