INK ON SCREEN – produced by Asterisk
Films and Justine Waddell – is the film
strand of the Mayfair & St James’s Literary
Festival, showcasing the best of Mayfair and
St James’s history and culture at the heart
of the capital. Taking place at the Regent
Street Cinema, which recently underwent a
major restoration, it aims to spotlight the link
between cinema and the written word.
This inaugural season will be curated
by Tobias Menzies, whose acting credits
include Casino Royale, Game of Thrones and
Outlander. Most recently he played Prince
Philip in The Crown.
Ink on Screen is personal and quixotic,
with Tobias’s chosen films based on years of

watching films, reading scripts and creating
indelible characters. The season will also
include a Q&A with Tobias and contributors
from the chosen films.
The first film Tobias has selected is Don’t
Look Now – to be screened on Monday
October 28. Based on Daphne du Maurier’s
haunting short story Not After Midnight,
Nicolas Roeg’s iconic horror-thriller sees
a couple travelling to Venice after the
accidental death of their daughter.
With impressionistic imagery and
innovative editing techniques, as well as
two brilliant performances from Donald
Sutherland and Julie Christie, the film is now
considered a classic.

October 30 will see the screening of
Tobias’s second choice Under the Skin.
Loosely based on the cult novel by Michel
Faber, director Jonathan Glazer’s 2013
film starring Scarlett Johansson is the
breathtakingly visual tale of an otherworldly
woman driving around the Scottish
countryside, picking up random men who she
drugs and delivers to her home planet.
A meditation on factory farming, nature,
and what it is to be a merciful human
being, the film also boasts incredible
cinematography from Daniel Landin and a
remarkable score from Mica Levi.
