LETTER

I

’M not sure what to call this issue.
In the office, it’s been referred to as
“Issue 300”, “the 25th anniversary
special” and “the Forestry Expo
preview issue”. In any case,
editorially, it serves as all three (almost
as if someone planned it that way).
That means it’s a bumper edition. At
100 pages, I’m told it’s the biggest in
Forestry Journal history, with a hefty chunk
dedicated to a preview of Forestry Expo
Scotland 2019. This new event, taking
place on 22 and 23 August at Elvanfoot,
South Lanarkshire, aims to showcase the very best the forestry
industry can offer.
How it all came together is a story in itself. Sensing the need for
a first-class harvesting demo and trade exhibition in Scotland, a
group of industry partners, including the world’s leading machine
manufacturers, united to create something absolutely unique. As
one of those partners, Forestry Journal is proud to play a key role in
its organisation and delivery.
Forestry Expo’s slogan is “from seed to sawmill” and that’s
the theme we’ve chosen for this special preview/celebration
issue, with an array of features designed to provide an insightful
overview of where the industry is right now.
We begin at the Millennium Seed Bank, with a report on the
Future Trees Trust Annual Supporters Day, followed by articles
focussed on tree planting, pest control and general forest
management.
Then, we move into harvesting, with a look at John Deere’s
1110G forwarder in action, a review of Stihl’s new 500i chainsaw,
a company profile of Approved Hydraulics and a look at the
technology keeping lone workers safe out in the woods.
Next, it’s the turn of timber haulage with a look at Great Glen
Shipping, followed by our Buyer’s Guide, focussed on static and
mobile sawmill solutions, and a profile of Pentland Biomass – truly
the final destination for many a tree.
Of course, that’s far from all. With the usual abundance of news
and regular features, there’s plenty to keep you informed and
entertained in the weeks leading up to Forestry Expo.
I look forward to seeing you there!
