BritishRailways in Unseen
Colour 1948-1968
By KevinRobertson
IFYOUweretoc hoose oneword to describe
this new book from CrecyPublishing,then
‘superb’would likely suffice.
‘Wow’would also beacontender.
Volumes of previously unseen images
arealwaysadelight,
and thiscollection
of colour work from
the late RoyVincent
does not disappoint.
While not aswell-
knownass ome of
his contemporaries,

Roy’sphotographs areeasily on apar with
theirs,and being incolour offerabright
new lookat theheyda yofBRsteam.
As the introduction notes,despitethe fact
some of the slides arenow almost 70years
old,their condition isexcellent.
Thebook is laid out with one ortwo
images per page,each accompaniedby
adetailed caption.Thesubjectmatte ris
varied andwell illustratesthe breadth of
RoyVincent’simages,fromgems such
as GreatEastern‘E4’2-4-0s and LNER
articulatedelectric stock,LondonTransport
0-6-2Tsand theWelshpool&Llanfair
Railway in 1956, andLyme Regis and
Bodmin&Wadebridge branches.

Yetthe book alsocovers the less obvious
subjectmatte r–the Marland LightRailway
in Devon, aPullman campingcoach at
Heacham, signalling,station furnitureand
breakdown equipment. Whether spotless
and gleaming orwork-stained andweary,
they have aplace in this book
Thanks to superbreproduction and
high-qualitypaper the photographs left
this reviewerwantingmoreafter every
page, and at £20 it iswell worththe money.
Highly recommended.GBH

SHEFFIELD is one of Britain’s largest
and most industrialised cities.Thatitno
longer possesses major freightfacilities
or alocomotivedepot is little shortof
astonishing.
This impressivebook takes us back
to the days when theSouthYorkshire
metropoliswasone of the most
importantplacesonthe Britishrailway
map,possessingamarshalling yard
of vast proportions and arguably the
nation’s most famous diesel depot.
Thesteel cit yand its environs once
boasted several major steam sheds but
we don’t even have to go back as far as
thatfor this story, forTinsley wasvery
muchaproductoft he diesel era.
It wasbuilt in the 1960sto replace
whatwas describedat thetime as a
“chaotic and incoherent”system in which
dozens of small goodsyardsand sidings
required shunting and tripworking in
orderto function. At one time the depot
(coded 41A)boastedalocoalloc ationof
morethan 200, one of the largest in the
countr y.
This thoroughlyresearched 240-page
book uses morethan 400 photographs
and diagrams,manyinc olour.The
first 40 or so pages aredevotedto a

fascinatingcollection of historic and
nostalgic illustrations depicting locations
such as Aldwarke, Canklo w, Darnall,
Grimesthorpe,Ickles ,Masborough,
Nunnery, Parkga te andthe Sheffield
DistrictRailway.
Thenextfew sections deal with the
birth of the shed andyard, fe aturing
rarely seen photos of itsconstruction.
Theformal opening date wasOctober
29, 1965 withformer BRB chairmanLord
Beeching unveiling the plaque.Thereare
chapters onTinsley’s Class 13 master-
and-slave shunters,breakdown trains,
electrified lines and tripworkings...as
well as 41A’s unofficial naming policy,
which producedasuccession of‘celebrity
locomotives’.
Closures and track-lifting of parts of the
yard began as early as 1984–less than
20 years afterthe opening–emphasising
howrapidly Britain’s post-industrial
landscapewaschanging.The depot
finally closed onMarch27, 1998, having
possessedat least 288 differently
numbered Class 47sat variou stimes of its
life. Todayacar dealers hip stands where
its 12 dead-endroads oncemaintained
traction ofafar morepowerful variety,
whileamassivelogistics building has
obliteratedthe eastern half of theyard.

Thebook finishes withacollection
of personalreminiscences fromformer
members of staff.
Theprice reflects its high production
values and it will hopefully provea
worthwhile purchaseformodern traction
enthusiasts andSouthYorkshiremen
alike.NP
