GWRdieselrailcar No.W20W is
receivingathoroughoverhaul
atTenterde nonthe Kent&East
Sussex Railway (KESR).
No.20was builtat Swindon in
1940, withdrawnin1962, and after
four years of storagewasbought
by the KESR.
It arri vedbyrail as an‘out-of-
gauge load’inApril 1966.Years
of restor ation followed,before
entering servicebyChristmas
1972.It had the dutyofhauling
the KESR’s first reve nue-earning
train inFebruary1974.
It waswithdrawnafter six years
of regular use because of severe
body panelcorrosionand general
rot. Some restor ation took place
during the 1980s and ’90s,but
No.W20W really needed major
surgery.
A‘wheels-up’restoration has
been slowly taking placeinr ecent
years.
Work has includedreplacing
most metal body panels and
renewal ofrotted bodyframework.
Theoriginal windowtop-light

ventilators,set in thewooden
structure, will have modern safety
glass fitted.
Seat frames arestoredbut will
needrecovering.Anew wiring
loom isrequired,but most of
the instruments andcontrol
systemcomponents just need
refurbishing.
Thetwo AEC 105hp engines
have beenreconditioned and
run, gearboxesrefurbished,and
the propshafts and differential
units checked and passedfor
use.The brakesystemhas been
overhauled.
Theinterior side panelling has
beenrenewed and undercoated,
while the majorityoft he outside is
nowinprimer,with the final livery
to be decided.
