Motability cars, in which he
travelled just 4000 miles in seven
years it was clear something
had to change. Although it was
possible to drive a vehicle from
an electric wheelchair, at the
time it couldn’t be done from a
manual chair such as Lee’s. Then
he heard it was now possible
to have a manual chair and

Lee knew exactly what he wanted:
“It had to be a VW Transporter
and it had to look cool”
longer the easy, fun thing it had
been before. The biggest problem
was getting in and out of the
car. Transferring from his chair
required lots of help from carers,
so he would go for weeks without
driving. As he lived in a small
village he quickly became isolated.
His only other option was a
car in which he could sit in his
wheelchair and be driven, but this
wasn’t a realistic solution. He says,

crash, which broke his neck and
left him tetraplegic. After a year
in hospital, Lee was finally able
to go home, eager to drive again.
