I

t has been a few years since my
last visit and I was immediately
impressed at how the event has
grown. There were far more
campers than I remembered,
with both the designated camping
field and the periphery of the show
packed with vans of all types. I
always find it interesting to wander
around the camping areas and check
out the various set-ups and quickly
got talking to Pete Cooper and his
wife Rachael from Preston. They
had brought along their ex- British
Telecom T4 which they have owned
for ten years. It had already been

converted when found and the
couple have used it to travel widely
in Italy, Spain and Germany. Moving
onto the stands there was plenty
to see from VW merchandise to
second-hand parts and items of
trim. Having a good root around for
that elusive piece for your van or
maybe a themed t-shirt or headgear
is all part of the show experience.
When it came to clothing there was
plenty to choose from, with sponsors
Vagabond prominent amongst the
stalls. The kids weren't ignored with
a free bouncy castle and plenty of
activities including arts & crafts and

cardboard car racing. I chatted with
the Volksfling organizing staff who
explained how more effort had been
put into creating a family experience
and it certainly showed.
As always there were plenty of
commercial contributions from hire
and conversion specialists, including
local company 'Wee Campers'.
Only running for a year and based
at Carluke they hire, sell and build
their own conversions (look out for a
shop tour in a future issue). The clubs
were also out in force with both the
Lothian's and West of Scotland VW
Clubs attending amongst others. There
were plenty of interesting vehicles
on display from early Split Screen
campers to the latest T6 California,
alongside Beetles, Polos and Golfs.

van or classic VW and I spotted an
