improve the off-road
potential and practicality

fter completing an
undergraduate placement
at Audi UK and then
moving on to the graduate
scheme at Honda Europe,
Owen Lloyd finally ended up at
Bentley Motors working in product
management on the Flying Spur and
Continental GT models. Of course,
working in the industry generally
means that you have an interest in
all things automotive and this is
certainly the case for Owen, he has
owned many different makes and
models over the years as he is a fan
of most genres. When his collection
gets too big then something has to
go whether it’s a Porsche 911, an
Audi A2, a Land Rover Defender,
a Fiat Barchetta, or even a rare 4x4
Mercedes Sprinter van. The latter
was modified to a more overland spec
and looked great, but it was just not
practical to use on a daily basis, that’swhen he spotted the Caddy 4Motion.
Volkswagen made four wheel
drive an option on the new model
Caddy, launched in 2010, it was
available exclusively for the longer
Maxi versions, powered by the
tough yet refined 2.0 TDI 16v engine.
The biggest customers for the
4Motion originally were utilities
companies and councils who found
this relatively small 4x4, with its go
anywhere capabilities very useful,
with many clocking up big mileages.
Owen had seen lots of modified
Caddys running low suspensionFull width bedBig enough for a 6+ footer
and big wheels, but wanted to do
something different and went in the
opposite direction, taking inspiration
from his high-riding Sprinter 4x4
and other iconic off-roaders such
as the Defender, Unimog U400,
G Class, T4 Syncro and even the
original Fiat Panda 4x4. In short
a Swamper, although Owen isn’t
a fan of that term, but if we only
use it once I expect we’ll get away
with it... Another thing that Owen
isn’t a fan of, are things that don’t
do what they advertise, so a four-
