large diamond pattern, in favour of
the new design. Bentley’s 'Porpoise
grey' thread and piping in the same
colour, have been included too, to
finish it off perfectly. Owen wanted
the bed as large as possible as he’s a
tall guy and needed the space to be
able to stretch out and watch the drop
down, 12-volt, LG television that has
been installed in the roof. An HDMI
cable has been built in too, so that a
DVD can be played from a laptop or
an X Box can be connected should
the need arise. Of course, the van
has been insulated, ply lined and
veltrimmed, but in two colours to
brighten the interior a bit. The Altro
flooring has been chosen with shade
in mind too, to try and make sure the
rear of the van isn’t too dark, some
warm LED downlighters have also
been installed. Two extra windows
with openers have been included, to
provide ventilation and more light. To
ensure privacy, curtains have been
added, the rear doors have been left
as standard with the steel intact. Up
front has been left in standard trim,
Owen likes the utilitarian, rugged,

online after looking through many
conversion companies, few of whom
were interested in the smaller
Caddy, but Freedom were more
than happy to do the job as they had
been perfecting their conversion
package for this model for some
time. The brief was fairly simple
and didn’t include any cupboards,
as space is at a premium. The rock
and roll bed installed has received
some treatment that Owen is used to
seeing at work, it has been trimmed
using Bentley’s square diamond
seat quilting design, first seen in the
2016 model Continental GT model.
The company that built the bed
liked the specially commissioned
design so much, that they have
even stopped using their original

build. VW use the Haldex system
which uses an electro-hydraulic
clutch actuator and a centrifugal
overflow valve design that aims
to accurately distribute the power
between the front and rear axles. All
this means it goes where it’s needed,
and the van shouldn’t ever find
itself somewhere it can’t get out of.
Owen found this very low mileage
ex-council example in Telford,
once it was bought, he set about
creating what you see here. Once
the mechanicals were checked and
the brakes replaced, along with new
wheels, tyres and roof bars from
Rossendale Motor Specialists, he
visited the nice people at Freedom
Conversions to convert it into an
overland camper. He’d found them
