J
im Mularkey had been toying
with the idea of getting a
camper van for some time
to take him and his wife,
Oonagh, out on the road for
some adventures. It had taken a
little while to convince her, but
once he got the green light to trial
the idea, he started his research.
As a very busy man he had neither
the time nor the inclination to
build his own vehicle, so he did
the only logical thing. He set
about looking for a conversion
company that would bring their
ideas to reality. After receiving
a recommendation from a friend,
Jim visited Stuart Lee at AMA
Transporters, to have a look at
what the company were doing.
After a couple of subsequent visits
to the company’s West Midlands
headquarters and some discussions
with Stuart, Jim was happy enough
to pull the trigger and order a new
T6 Kombi Highline in Chestnut
Brown, with the upgraded
Devonport alloy wheels. Ordering
the Highline meant that the van
came with a host of extras from the
factory including air conditioning,
a heated windscreen, cruise

control and a DAB touchscreen
stereo, to mention just a few.
Choosing a Kombi as the base
meant that there was no need to
cut the body for windows, and
the Highline spec meant that
the bumpers would already be
painted to match the body colour.
After ordering the van Jim called
Stuart and booked the Kombi in
with AMA for them to complete
the conversion. The reins were
then handed over to Oonagh as she
would lead the project from here.
AMA stripped out the hardboard
and thin ply that VW include in
their vehicles and replaced it with
something a little more substantial,
after they’d added some insulation
of course, they then secured the
new panels with hidden fixings.
Oonagh chose the companies
Tourer+ package and picked out
17" VW Devonports
The RIB bed the couple
chose has been mounted
on Caravelle rails
