Snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef

bladder reminded me that we had
consumed an unholy amount of
water between dives yesterday.
Suddenly there was a slap on
the windscreen, the window
wiper being dropped back
onto the glass. “That’s a fine
of $261 for illegal camping in
the shire of Port Douglas!”
Fighting the urge to get up
and peek through the curtains
was almost impossible, but we
continued to play dead for the
next twenty minutes. We were
still idiotically clinging onto the
hope that the ranger was bluffing
and didn’t want to get out of
the van and break our cover.
Eventually Dan climbed over
the worktop and between the
bench and driver’s seats. It was
not a graceful entrance into the
cab, but it was the one which
drew the least attention. Then
he laughed out loud. Under our
window wiper was an informative
list of campsites in Port Douglas,
nothing more. The ranger had
been trying to scare us into
revealing our presence in the van
and no doubt would have fined
us if we hadn’t waited the extra
time before moving. We had
successfully evaded a fine. Feeling
smug that our tactic had worked A waterfall to ourselves
