O

nly a few months
young, The Kindred
Kitchen is bringing
change to Port
Elizabeth by offering
city dwellers a taste
of delicious and
wholesome plant-based fare. A first of
its kind in The Bay, this eatery – which
won Best Eco-Conscious Hospitality
Establishment at the Faithful to Nature
Eco Awards last year – is on a peaceful
mission to inspire diners one bite at a
time. And we are so here for it.

The extensive menu lures you in, promising
everything from hearty breakfast options
(like a vegan-friendly shakshuka and toast,
and a savoury buckwheat-and-beetroot
pancake) to nourishing lunch meals (think
everything from fashionable Buddha and
nori bowls to Mexican tacos with refried
beans and crunchy slaw, as well as a few
mean – or rather kind – burger options like
the bean-and-mushroom burger or the
falafel patty).
The Vietnamese summer roll served with
a sesame-soya sauce makes for the perfect
starter. Next, I tuck into the falafel burger
that comes topped with greens, a delicious
beetroot hummus and some mint-and-
coriander pesto.
Feeling pretty content and on the verge
of giving dessert a skip, the friendly waiter
entices me with the chocolate, coconut
and raspberry bar. I’m sold and, while
blissfully savouring each last crumb,
I mentally schedule my next visit.

STANDOUT FEATURES
Locally Yours prides itself in its
meticulous curation of vendors. With a
rotation principle, the market ensures
visitors are presented with a mix of old
and new traders, keeping the offerings
fresh while encouraging a regular return.
 Supporting entrepreneurial makers
from the greater Eastern Cape, Locally
Yours has up to 65 vendors that hand-
make, grow, craft, cook, bake and design
their products. If you’re visiting for the
first time, you’re in for a treat.
From food to decor Locally Yours has it
all! Greeted by the Milkwood stall as you
enter, you can easily stock up on fresh
veggies, comprising everything from
luscious green bunches of spinach to
hearty mushrooms. Dinner is sorted!

THE VIBE
Locally Yours is a true reflection of
the friendly Bay’s energy, with smiling
faces at every turn and a helping
hand at a moment’s request. There’s
a healthy mix of young and old – from
moms with toddlers to couples out on
dates. The market also complements
its surroundings and offers visitors
all the comforts of an indoor facility,
including wheelchair access.

INDULGE IN...
Since it’s a balmy Saturday, ice cream
is on the cards for me. The home-
made ice-cream delivery business
iScream catches my eye with its
vintage cart and selection of mouth-
watering flavours. Today’s limited-
edition combo is peaches and cream,
which leaves me in silence as I savour
each spoonful.

TAKE ME HOME
A firm favourite and fridge staple
is a jar or two of the artisanal brand
Mustard Deli’s flavoured mustards.
With a range that includes everything
from spicy jalapeño to tequila and
lime, you’ll definitely find one that
strikes your taste buds. On a sweeter
note, Basic and Beautiful Foods’ (BAB
Foods) home-made spelt and almond
flour, rolled oats, seed and nut rusks
won me over!
