EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh,
Wisconsin, went to Gulfstream for
the development of the G500 busi-
ness jet as the Savannah, Georgia,
company’s president, Mark Burns,
accepted the 2019 Flying Innovation
Award from the magazine’s editor-
in-chief, Stephen Pope, at an awards
presentation on July 22.
The G500 competed against four
other contenders for the main prize,
with nominees consisting of the win-
ner’s of the 2019 Flying Editors’
Choice Awards, which were revealed
in January. In addition to the G500,the nominees for the Innovation
Award included Garmin’s TXi touch-
screen avionics systems, the Pilatus
PC-24 business jet, Vashon Ranger
light-sport aircraft and Lancair Mako
high-performance single.
This was the third annual Flying
Innovation Award after the Cirrus
Vision Jet won the inaugural prize in
2017 and the HondaJet was named the
winner in 2018. Next year’s nominees
will be named in January 2020, again
with the overall winner revealed at
AirVenture next summer.
The prize is intended to recognize
the most technologically significantdevelopment in general aviation
to have reached the market in the
preceding year. To be eligible, a prod-
uct must simply not be announced,
it must also be certified and
available for sale.
“The Flying Innovation Award is
intended to recognize the accom-
plishments of the teams of engineers,
marketers, production specialists,
pilots and others who strive each and
every day to bring incredible new
products to general aviation,” Pope
says. “The Gulfstream G500—with its
multitude of touchscreen displays in
the cockpit, f ly-by-wire f light control
architecture, and remarkable per-
formance and efficiency—represents
the pinnacle in business-jet design.
