What’s the opposite of on-demand TV? Live

broadcast. So see if you can you spot the odd

one out in this month’s ‘streaming’ selection...

STREAM

US Open Tennis
Amazon Prime’s push into the
world of live sport broadcasting
is well underway. It’ll be airing 20
English Premier League matches
this season, but for starters we’ll
be heading to Flushing Meadows
for the US Open where Novak
Djokovic, fresh off his Wimbledon
triumph, will be looking to defend
his men’s singles title.
Live sport / Amazon Prime

Brassic
With Preacher finished and This
Is England on indefinite hiatus,
Joe Gilgun needs a new platform
to show off his roguish talents.
Step forward Sky’s latest comedy
series, with Gilgun starring as the
head of a gang of working-class
mates looking for ‘alternative’
ways to make a bob or two in
suburban Lancashire.

American Factory
Hotly tipped for an Oscar nod,
this feature-length doc from the
Obamas’ production company
tracks the tragicomic culture clash
that unfolds when a Chinese tech
billionaire opens a factory in the
US rust belt. Illuminating the wildly
different approaches of the two
‘sides’, it’s a timely look at the
globalised economy.
Film / Netflix

Carnival Row
Anyone yearning for more gothic
vibes should find Carnival Row right
up their... row. Set in the sort of dark
fantasy-Victorian world seen in the
likes of Bloodborne, this Amazon
series stars Cara Delevingne and
Orlando Bloom as a faerie and a
human detective in a setting where
mythical creatures have ‘migrated’
into the real world.

Free Meek

Rapper Meek Mill may be known on
this side of the pond for being Nicki
Minaj’s ex, and for his tiresome beef
with Drake, but in the States he’s
become a figurehead in the fight
for justice reform. On probation
since his teens on some very shaky
charges, Meek’s battle to stay out of
prison while changing the system is
charted in this six-part Amazon doc.

The Dark Crystal:
Age of Resistance

Almost 40 years from the original
Dark Crystal film, Jim Henson’s
fantasy world is back courtesy of
Netflix. If you’re imagining this new
series as a modern CGI-fest, think
again: it’s been created using the
same sort of animatronics and
puppetry as the 1982 movie. Yep,
it’s The Muppet Show for goths.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Film / NowTV

Spidey takes a break from the behemoth of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and finds a
new direction in this wildly inventive animated movie, which uses the multiverse theory
(essentially, that there are an infinite number of parallel dimensions co-existing on top of
each other) to take the web-slinger off in all sorts of weird and wonderful directions. To
reveal more would spoil the joy of watching this alternative origin story, which brilliantly
parallels the one we’ve already seen in so many other movies, comics and games.
