TESTED OPPO RENO 10X ZOOM

Zoom-topia
Oppo uses software
to boost the camera’s
hardware, letting you
shoot at 6x and 10x
zoom using a button
next to the
shutter.

Q Power up the Reno 5G and
you’ll see the same 16MB pop-up
selfie-cam that’s the star of the
10x Zoom model. We would say
use it for face unlocking, but the
in-screen fingerprint scanner
is about the quickest we’ve used.

Q The Reno 5G’s screen is a
6.6in AMOLED with no notches
or punch-holes, thanks to that
clever sharkfin. It’s bold, colourful
and incredibly contrasty. It isn’t
as bright as some rivals, but you
won’t notice that as often as you
would a double punch-hole eating
into your Netflix picture.

Q The most important feature is
invisible – 5G. It’s early days for
that, but the hardware is worth
it for futureproofing and coverage
will only improve; the only snag
is, you’ll pay for a full service now
while it’s still maturing. Just as
well, then, that this is one of the
cheapest 5G phones around.

Q You get a big battery, 256GB
of storage, a Snapdragon 855 and
beefy stereo speakers, while the
ColorOS interface feels much less
bogged-down with crapware than
it is on the Reno 10x Zoom.

Q This thing’s zooming powers
capture scenes that other phones
simply can’t, although there’s
no optical zoom for video. Oh,
and selfies are more than solid.

Q Camera
trickery
You get the same
camera setup
as the Reno 10x
Zoom... which
does not include
a fully optical
10x zoom.
It’s a ‘normal’
48MP cam, a
5x optical zoom
and an 8MP
ultra-wide-angle.

Q Shaking
that glass
The Reno 5G has
a glass rear, but
it’s matt rather
than gloss. The
flush cameras
add to the feeling
of slickness, and
you have the
same colour
choice as with
the 10x Zoom:
black or green.

Q Color
schemes
The ColorOS 6
UI includes some
useful extra apps,
including a file
manager and
a game mode
that lets you
change how the
phone handles
notifications
and so on while
you’re playing.

Screen 6.6in 2340x1080 AMOLED Processor Snapdragon
855 RAM 8GB OS Android 9.0 with ColorOS 6 Cameras
48MP + 13MP + 8MP rear, 16MP front Battery 4065mAh
Storage 256GB Dimensions 162x77x9.3 mm, 215g

STUFF SAYS ++++,
A great choice if you’re
gagging for a 5G phone

The Reno 5G is a great phone, and one
of the more affordable first-wave 5G
models, but we’re not sure we’d choose
it over the Reno 10x Zoom. You need
a crazy-expensive 5G contract and
there’s a postcode lottery for coverage.
