BEYOND WORDS READ MUCH LATER

QWatch it later
Both apps can store content
with embedded video – see
Instapaper’s Video sidebar
link, and Videos under ‘Content
type’ in Pocket. Both also
load a player when you save
YouTube links to a list, so you
can combine ‘read it later’ and
‘watch it later’.

QListen right now
When you’re driving, cooking
or just too flat-out tired to
read, Pocket lets you burn
through your list by turning
it into a podcast. Just tap the
headphones button and then
press play. It’s like a robot
reading you the news.

RSS
Whereas RIL is about
saving something you’d
like to read, RSS is more
about ensuring you
don’t miss out: you
can subscribe to RSS
feeds using the likes of
Feedly. But many RSS
readers add basic RIL
functionality, and also
integrate with Instapaper
and Pocket.

SOCIAL MEDIA
The random nature of
social feeds means it’s
murder to find anything
once it’s scrolled off
the screen. But you can
use ‘... > Save post’ in
Facebook, and Twitter
offers bookmarking
under the share button.
Or just share posts to a
RIL service.

PDFs
With a rather different
angle on the whole ‘read
it later’ thing, the clunkily
named (but free) ‘Web to
PDF Converter & Reader’
iOS app has you convert
web pages to PDFs.
These are decluttered
but retain their links, and
are suitable for stashing
wherever you like, online
or offline.

OTHER

OPTIONS

QBuild an archive
Once you’re done with an
article, you can archive or
delete it. Clearly, which to
go for depends on whether
you’d potentially like to read
something again – if so, don’t
hesitate to archive it. Note that
full-text archive search means
going premium.

QTag your articles
To make archived articles
easier to find later in Pocket,
head to the three dots and
tap ‘Add tags’. You can then
access articles from the
left-hand menu’s Tags section,
which also allows you to edit
your tags.

QFind your font
How type is set can affect your
reading experience. To make
changes in Instapaper, tap ‘Aa’
then adjust the font, size and
(via ‘More options’) spacing.
Pocket’s options are fewer,
and most of the fonts require
Pocket Premium.

QGet sorted
In Pocket, access the settings
via the Profile tab and you can
sort articles by date. Instapaper
matches and adds to this: the
Sort menu lets you order your
list by length, reading progress,
popularity or ‘shuffle’.

QGo dark
When updating how the type
looks in these RIL apps, you’ll
also see theme options. These
include light, dark and sepia.
Delve into the settings and
you can automate a switch
to dark mode at night, to save
your eyeballs from frying.
