WoodwardDreamCruise Aug. 17

DETROIT, Mich. _ The Woodward Dream Cruise, billed
as world’s largest one-day automotive event, will again relive
the heyday of the muscle car era in Detroit on Aug. 17. The
event is annually held on the third Saturday of August along
Woodward Avenue as drivers travel from the suburbs of Pon-
tiac through Ferndale in Oakland County, Mich., to the State
Fair Grounds within the Detroit city limits, just south of 8
Mile Road. The cruise and related festivities reportedly draw
about 1.5 million people and 40,000 classic cars each year
from around the world.
Woodward Avenue became a main street in Detroit in the
early 1900s and was lined with mansions and churches. In the
1950s, it became well known as a gathering spot for young
street racers and cruisers.
The cruise “offi cially” began as an organized entity in
1994 in an effort to help raise money for a children’s soccer
fi eld in Ferndale. The cruise offi cially takes place on Aug. 17
this year, but the celebration starts early in the summer as the
classic vehicles begin to appear on local streets. The spon-
soring communities of Ferndale, Pleasant Ridge, Royal Oak,
Huntington Woods, Berkley, Bloomfi eld Township, Bloom-
fi eld Hills and Pontiac collaborate on related events.

Rhode Island gets new plate law

PROVIDENCE, R.I. _ Rhode Island legislation to allow
vehicles with “year of manufacture” (YOM) license plates

to display a single plate on the rear of the vehicle has passed
the deadline for the governor’s signature or veto, and thus
has become law without being signed. All motor vehicles 25
model years old and older are currently eligible for courtesy
YOM plates in Rhode Island. Previously, these vehicles were
required to display both front and rear YOM plates.

PA law would offer ‘heritage’ plates

HARRISBURG, Pa. _ Pennsylvania legislation has been
introduced that would allow the sale of limited-edition 1950s-
and 1960s-style heritage license plates. These plates would be
available for all passenger cars and trucks with a gross weight
less than 14,000 lbs., motorcycles, and motor homes for an
additional $50 fee. They would be available to purchase for a
fi ve-year period. If enacted into law, the bill would not impact
the state’s current specialty license plate offerings. The bill
currently awaits consideration in the House Transportation
Committee.

Our “Weathered Wheels” ace Steve Isola, of
Duluth, Minn., spotted this 1957 Chevrolet
Bel Air four-door sedan
recently and he never passes up a chance to
snap a photo. “It has one of the classic blue-
and-white color
combinations for Chevy of that year,” he
says. “Looks like a solid survivor that needs
to get restored. I hope it doesn’t have to stay
there when winter sets in. I did not stop and
ask details about it.”
