A 1954 Oldsmobile 88 two-door
sedan didn’t make it across the railroa
tracks before getting taken out by
a train. Th is violent mishap took
place back on June 28, 1957, andwas
photographed
by the late Rodman Bingham. The ‘
were the fastest Olds ever with upto
170 hp from the 324-cid block. They
could do 0-to-60 mph in 12.4 seconds
and cover the quarter-mile in 18
seconds. Calendar-year productionof
433,810 Oldsmobiles included 18,
coupes in the 88 series and 27,
Super 88 coupes.

Early Studebakers to reunite
MANSFIELD, Ohio _ Two historic electric Stude-
bakers will be displayed from Sept. 12-14 at the 55th
Studebaker Drivers Club International Meet in Mansfi eld,
Ohio. The meet will
be hosted by the Key-
stone Region of the
SDC at the Richmond
County Fairgrounds.
“Tommy” and
“Peg” are two custom-
built, battery-powered
Studebakers built in
1908 to transport U.S.
senators and represen-
tatives through a tun-
nel between the capi-
tol and the Russell
Senate Offi ce Build-
ing. Each vehicle had
12 6-volt batteries
with a range of 85 miles. The two vehicles made an av-
erage of 225 trips with 2,200 passengers each day. The

Roadster by Fleetwood, owned by the collection of Joseph
and Margie Cassini, was named Best of Show at the 2019
Concours d’Elegance at Copshaholm. The event is run by the
Studebaker National Museum.
Other award winners included: J. M. Studebaker Award for
Most Outstanding Studebaker to a 1932 Studebaker Presi-
dent convertible sedan owned by George Vassos; the Leland
Award for Most Elegant Lincoln to a 1937 Lincoln K semi-col-
lapsible cabriolet owned by John Steckbeck; Raymond Loewy
Award: Exemplary Exterior Design, to a 1932 Auburn 8-100A
cabriolet owned by Gary & Cheryl Howe; the Helen Dryden
Award: Exemplary Interior Design to the 1955 Studebaker
President Speedster owned by Larry Gardon; the Fred &
Augie Duesenberg Award: Engineering Excellence to the 1911
Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost owned by Steven Haines; Mayor’s
Choice to a 1958 Studebaker President Starlight hardtop
owned by Mark James; and President’s Choice to the 1939
Lincoln K LeBaron convertible roadster from Chicago Vintage
Motor Carriage.
