A change of room and floor herald the Pure
Heaven Facial. As I lie on the massage table, I can
smell the fresh fruit pulp and dal powders that are
to be used in the facial. Mary begins by cleansing my
face with a concoction of exotic herbs mixed with
aloe vera, lemon peel, tulsi, and butter. Then comes
a destressing face and shoulder massage with floral
oils, in the middle of which I am almost ready to doze
off. The herbal steam and gentle scrub that follow
make my skin feel nourished, and then a natural
mask of powdered rose petal, honey, and herbs is
applied. A papaya pack brings the facial to a close.
The best is left to be savoured last. The
Abhayangam, a 60-minute head-to-toe massage,
improves blood circulation and helps rejuvenate
the body. With their synchronised movements and
the right amount of pressure, two therapists coax
all the stiffness out of my body. I spend a quick 10
minutes in the en-suite steam room, and come out
refreshed, relaxed, and ready to take the plunge
back into life as I know it. earthenwellness.com

COURTESY OF JEAN-CLAUDE BIGUINE SALON & SPA
At Bengaluru’s Earthen Wellness, the use of
natural, Ayurvedic, and herbal products provides
a unique approach to holistic wellness.
I AM BURSTING WITH EXCITEMENT at the prospect
of spending a day at Earthen Wellness. The day
spa, strategically located in Ulsoor, is like an oasis
in the hustle-bustle of Bengaluru. I walk into the
spa to be greeted warmly by Mary, my therapist
for the day. The ambience is soothing—the music
is soft and made up of sounds of nature, and the
decor is a mix of contemporary and traditional
elements. The therapy rooms integrate the vital
elements of earth, water, fire, and ether. The use of
natural materials like bamboo, mud plaster, Indian
bidasar, marble, and wood soothe the senses, and
perfectly adapt to every therapy.
I leave it to the experts to select the therapies
for me, and they recommend that I pamper myself
with the spa’s signature treatments. My day begins
with an Ayurvedic Pedicure, which uses a seven-
step approach to cleanse the feet. First, my feet
are scrubbed with incha, then they are soaked in
naalpamradi kashaya (which improves circulation),
after which they are rubbed with besan, turmeric,
and Ayurvedic herbs to remove dead skin. Mary
knows exactly how and where to apply pressure
when she massages my legs and feet, and the
herbal steam and compressing that follow seal in
