became a staff writer in 2016.

Joshua Yaffa (“Channelling Putin,”
p. 22), a Moscow correspondent for the
magazine, will publish “Between Two
Fires: Truth, Ambition, and Compro-
mise in Putin’s Russia” in January.

Amanda Petrusich (Pop Music, p. 68)
is a staff writer and the author of
“Do Not Sell at Any Price: The Wild,
Obsessive Hunt for the World’s Rarest
78 rpm Records.”

Peter de Sève (Cover) is an illustrator
and a character designer for animated
movies. He has contributed more than
forty covers to the magazine.

Sarah Larson (The Talk of the Town,
p. 20) is a staff writer. Her column, “Pod-
cast Dept.,” appears on newyorker.com.

David Biespiel (Poem, p. 64) is the poet-
in-residence at Oregon State University.
His books include the poetry collection
“Republic Café” and the forthcoming
memoir “A Place of Exodus.”

Joshua Rothman (“Mirror World,” p. 50)
has been an editor and writer at the
magazine since 2012.

Kelefa Sanneh (“Outside Shot,” p. 30) is
a staff writer.

Louise Erdrich (Poem, p. 43) is the au-
thor of seventeen novels, including
“LaRose,” the winner of a National
Book Critics Circle Award, and “The
Night Watchman,” which comes out
next year.

Emilio Fraia (Fiction, p. 60), a writer
and editor, was named one of Brazil’s
best young writers by Granta. An En-
glish translation of his story collection
“Sebastopol” will be published in 2021.

Claire Friedman (Shouts & Murmurs,
p. 29) is a comedy writer whose work
has won a Peabody Award. She writes
for “Desus & Mero” on Showtime.

Thomas Mallon (Books, p. 72) is a nov-
elist, an essayist, and a critic. His ten
books of fiction include “Finale” and,
most recently, “Landfall.”
