The Canon EOS M200 launches into a
tough market and, while it’s a decent
camera with some great easy-to-use
features for beginners, it doesn’t really
excite or produce compelling images.

OVERALL

Canon has prioritized reducing noise in
the M200’s Raws, as it generates slightly
cleaner images than the older M100

The trade-off for this image clarity is
lower dynamic range, though you’ll
struggle to spot any difference

Small wonder that with the same 24Mp,
the M200 and its predecessor manage to
capture the same amount of fine detail

white balance setting is reliable
though, while the Standard Picture
Style keeps colours punchy without
making things overly vibrant.
The M200 and 15-45mm kit lens
combo do pretty well at rendering
detail, but sharpness still leaves a
little to be desired. We noticed that
the out-of-focus details in some

rather mushy when under closer
inspection. Sensitivity ranges
between ISO100 and 25600
(ex pa ndable to ISO51,20 0) for st i l ls,
but we’d aim to limit the stills
setting to ISO6400, as pushing
higher can result in JPEGs that
look too smooth in places, while
the Raws can become noisy.

This 3-inch

screen is very
responsive, and it’s
easy to make setting
selections and
adjustments.

02
Sadly the M200
omits a port for an
external
microphone, so
you’re reliant on
the in-built mic.

03
The polycarbonate
build keeps weight
low, but it does feel
less than premium.

04
Canon’s E-FM
15-45mm kit lens is
wonderfully small
and light, though
sharpness is a bit
less remarkable.

05
If you’re trying to
spot an EVF, then
you’re out of luck, as
the M200 lacks this.

conditions. The performance isn’t
quite so assured in 4K video mode,
when the focusing switches from
phase detect to contrast-based
detection. However, when recording
1080p video or shooting still
images, the Face Tracking is
very good, even in low light.
With the odd exception, the
Canon EOS M200’s evaluative
metering mode does a good job of
getting the exposure of the main
subject right, and the 3-inch
touchscreen gives an accurate
preview of colour and contrast.
However, there are times when
you may want to dial in a little
negative exposure compensation to
darken the brighter areas. The auto
