SHOOT WITH A PRO
LEANNE’S COMMENT
Rebecca showed me how you can utilize your
subject in an open front door way! Using this
method you can get nicely lit portraits in any home. Here
we asked Chantelle to step back into the doorway until
there wasn’t any ‘top light’ and ugly shadows. Usually
hallways indoors are darker compared to people’s skin tones, so you end
with dark backgrounds and bright faces. We shot at an angle so the darker
wood panels behind created a more contrasting background.

THE APERTURE
OF CHOICE
“I LIKE to shoot with a really wide
aperture on prime lenses for clear
separation from the surroundings for
models to stand out,” says Rebecca.
“Leanne was using her Canon EF
50mm f/1.4 lens and advised to avoid
shooting wide open at f/1.4 as image
quality can suffer, plus by shooting
around f/2 you get better sharpness
across the frame. At this point it also
doesn’t matter if your focus isn’t
100% spot on the eyes or head.”
