LEANNE’S COMMENT

We really made use
of the simple window
side-light setup in the darker
lounge for this portrait,
ensuring we exposed for
Chantelle’s skin tones, to make the blue
background dark and dramatic. We tried sitting
and kneeling on the floor to be more at eye
level, and Rebecca said to compose wider from
further back, and include the plant to add
colour and create a more lifestyle, homely feel
to the shot. Rebecca said to move the AF points
to cover the head – rather than trying to focus
on the eyes that would be too small to focus on
accurately. I learned much on the day and can’t
wait to put my new skills into action with my
next make-up clients.

REBECCA’S VERDICT

For this shot we
moved further
back, so Chantelle’s legs
didn’t appear bigger in the
foreground of the frame as we
were shooting at 35mm. Asking Chantelle to
look towards the windows proves again you
don’t always need eye contact – and as she’s
looking towards the window it also lights her
face nicely. Leanne improved noticeably
throughout the day, and just needed some
confidence to know she was using the right
settings, such as AF point set-up. She learned
about how to position people in the best place
according to the window light in rooms and she
picked up on how to direct people to get better
poses and expressions.
