PROJECT INFO

The last light

Andrew Ray tells about his recent excursion to Snowdonia,
hoping to add to his extensive landscape portfolio

took these images in
Snowdonia whilst on
a two week trip to
Wales where I also
ventured to the
Brecon Beacons. I’m a
47-year old pro landscape
photographer, based in
Cornwall and my main
aim was to add sunset
and sunrise images to
my stock library.
I wanted to capture a
collection of atmospheric
landscapes with the emphasis
of my work being on the
quality of light, with the
golden hours around sunrise

and sunset being utilized
wherever it was possible.
The Welsh weather was a
vast improvement from what
I’d come to expect from
previous trips to the area in
the autumn... With a high
pressure system during the
ÀUVWZHHNUHVXOWLQJLQVHYHUDO
mornings of fog in the Usk
Valley, where I was staying.
I was able to include this
in numerous compositions I
captured from above the
landslip at the Llangattock
Escarpment. This was my
main photographic target for
the week. I also targeted the

slopes of Sugar Loaf
mountain, which is one of the
three peaks of Abergavenny.
Conditions were more
challenging in the Snowdonia
National Park during the
second week, with strong
winds and frequent heavy
showers of rain most days.
Thankfully, there were plenty
of sunny intervals, which
allowed me to capture sunlit
images during the day, and
often colourful clouds in the
hours around sunrise and
sunset. Capel Curig, in the
heart of the park, was an ideal
spot to be based for the week.
