What’s the
difference
between a
step-up and
step-down ring?
Terry Peterson, Wiltshire

BRIAN SAYS... Step
down rings are designed
to let you fit a smaller
threaded filter on to a
larger threaded lens. So if
your filter is 52mm and
your lens has a 58mm
thread you need a step
down ring, but be ready for
dark edges to the shot.
A step up ring allows a
larger filter to be fitted to
a smaller lens.

What does the
key symbol
indicate when
reviewing
images?
Oscar Marsh, Ipswich

BRIAN SAYS... The key
icon shown at the top of
the screen indicates that
the image is protected.
Protected images cannot
be deleted with the delete
button, but will be
removed when formatting
a card. You do this by
pressing the Q button.

My ISO range is
100 to 12,800,
so why can’t I
use less than
ISO200?
Kevin Thomas, Coventry

BRIAN SAYS... If you
have set the ISO range
with a lower level of
ISO100, then I am sure you
have Highlight Tone
Priority (HTP) on. When
this is set the minimum
ISO is 200. HTP improves
highlight gradation at the
expense of noise and loss
of detail in shadows.

  1. 4x and 2 x ex t ender s w i t h m y len s e s on
    the EOS 800D?
    Alexander Borthwick, Dunfermline

BRIAN SAYS... The EOS 800D can be used with EF and
EF-S lenses, and since the extenders are considered EF they
will certainly fit. One thing to be aware of is that the Canon
extenders physically have a section that sits inside the rear
of the lens they are fitted to. As such they only fit selected
L-series telephoto prime and zoom lenses.
It’s also important to know that you lose 1-stop of light
with a 1.4x and 2-stops with a 2x extender. Your EOS 800D
needs the combined lens plus extender to have at least an
f/8 aperture to be able to focus correctly. A 2x extender on
the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM means the aperture
becomes f/9 to f/11 and AF is not possible.

All Canon EF and EF-S lenses can be used with EOS 800D, extenders
can also be used but only with suitable EF lenses

Can you suggest a
suitable microphone

for vlogging?
Charlie Prout, Canterbury

BRIAN SAYS... To reduce background
noise, you need to place the mic close
to the sound you want to record. For
vlogging that means closer to your
mouth. Ideally you want a lavalier, or
tie-clip type microphone that plugs in
to your camera’s mic input. If you move
around a lot while shooting, or are
further from the camera, a wireless
lavalier mic might be worth it. Or you
can plug a mic in to your phone to
record, then sync in the edit.

A wireless mic such as the Rode Wireless Go
is a great solution for vlogging

Why is there a grey ring in the centre

o f t he L CD, or E V F, o f m y EO S R?
Caitlin Moulton, Uttoxeter

BRIAN SAYS... The grey ring displayed in the middle
of the EVF or LCD is an indication that spot or partial
metering is in use. The diameter of the ring is smaller
with spot metering than with partial. By default there
is no auto exposure lock when using Spot, Partial or
Centre-weighted metering with One-Shot AF mode.
This can be changed using a custom setting.
If you only see the ring while using
flash, it’s an indication
that flash exposure
lock (FEL) is on. EOS
cameras switch to
Spot metering at the
centre automatically
when using flash
exposure lock. Again
it’s a reminder of where
the camera is metering
the flash.

How do I set hyperfocal
dis t ance on t he R F 24 -

105mm for landscapes
on my EOS R?
Jim Rowse, Stourbridge

BRIAN SAYS... RF lenses don’t have a
focus distance scale on the lens, so
you have to use the on-screen focus
distance scale. By default the focus
distance is displayed whenever you set
an RF lens to manual focus, you can
display the focus distance in either
meters or feet. Unfortunately focus
distance scale is not displayed when
using EF or EF-S lenses.
