Joe Scarborough: Life in the Big Village
17 August to 24 November
First inspired by the overwhelming light and colour as he
emerged from the pits as a coal miner in Sheffield, Joe
Scarborough’s artistic career began in the 1960s when selling
a first painting for a fiver persuaded him to give up the day job.
Over the next 50 years he would produce a charming
portfolio of colourful paintings, soon becoming one of
Yorkshire’s best-loved artists. More than 60 works collected
here span the breadth of this vibrant artist’s career.

John Frederick Lewis:
Facing Fame
Until 3 November
Victorian artist John Frederick
Lewis never quite fit into the London
art scene. His wanderlust saw him
repeatedly visit Europe on painting
trips, before he settled in Cairo
in 1841 [In the Bezestein, El Khan
Khalil, Cairo, left].
When he returned a decade later
with a substantial body of vivid work
that captured his preoccupation with
architecture, light and culture, he
was welcomed back with open arms
as this charming exhibition explores.
