for the particular piece you are working on. For example,
I’m working on a painting for a man who collects paintings
by René Magritte, so I’m working in a style that’s my own
but it’s very much a Magrittean image. As a portrait artist
you are working with the sitter to paint the portrait they
want, so it’s nice to be able to adapt the way you work
to a particular commission. How you put paint on doesn’t
matter; what matters is what you’re trying to communicate.”

David is such a fluent, prolific artist, it’s a surprise to
learn he had a substantial hiatus from painting early in his
career. Having trained at Liverpool College of Art, where he
was tutored by Welsh painter Peter Prendergast, he fell in
with the religious cult known as the Moonies and moved to
Japan – an experience that turned his world upside down.
After leaving the organisation, he stayed on in Japan to
teach English. He married a Japanese woman in 1978 and
