The rigger is a long-pointed round
brush and used for painting fine lines,
such as hair, rigging on ships, and so
on. If you find a rigger too difficult to
control, try a swordliner instead.

Is it true I can use oil or watercolour
brushes if I’m painting in acrylic?
You can, sure. But know this: acrylic
paint kills brushes quickly. You’d be
best to have a separate set of brushes
for acrylics and keep your best ones
for watercolours and oils.

What is a “one stroke” brush?
One stroke is another name for a long
flat brush. They were originally used
for painting the sides of canal boats
or coaches, the idea being you’d only
need to dip the brush once and it
would create one stroke.

What is the benefit of buying a
dedicated varnishing brush?
I find the Series 444 to be the best
varnish brush on the planet. It is made
from badger hair, so it is coarse yet
soft and has immense carrying
capacity. It blends the varnish
smoothly and gives great control.

What is the best way to clean oil
paint from my brushes?
Start by wiping away the excess paint
from your brushes on a rag or paper
towel. You should then wash them
thoroughly with either soap, washing-
up liquid or white spirit. We also sell
Zest-It, which is an environmentally
friendly, biodegradable alternative to
turps and white spirit. It is made using
the zest of citrus fruit, a much safer
solvent for studio use.

What is the best way to store brushes
between painting sessions?
Leave them in pots, standing up right.
It’s an old wives’ tale to say that
leaving them upright would damage
the brush – we make our brushes with
a two-part epoxy glue, which is strong
and won’t allow the water or oil to
seep past it. Invest in a good carry

case too. Bamboo cases allow the
brushes to breathe between sessions.

They recommend changing a
toothbrush after three months. Does
the same apply to a paint brush?
You should replace your brushes when
you find they are no longer holding
their shape, their point or creating the
mark you intended them to make.
I’d say a six-month review is fine.

Are there any other ways I can make
my brushes last longer?
By taking care of them and investing
in the best you can afford. A good tip
is not to load the brush with paint
right down to the ferrule. And you
must make sure you clean the whole
brush; not doing so will cause it to
splay outwards.
