Concerns for the Secondary Market

Gold and silver as commodities have

been performing well recently. Gold

appears to remain at about $1,400 an

ounce, while silver continues to flirt with

$15 an ounce. This is reflected in the sell-

ing price of bullion and bullion-impact-

ed coins, however, US Mint sales and

other indicators suggest potential coin

investors remain in the equity markets

despite these gains. Collectors who have

remained steadfast the past few years are

able to reap their rewards if they choose

to sell. Dealers are anxious to restock,

since these coins sell fast. This includes

Gold and Silver American Eagles, com-

mon date and common condition pre-

cious metal coins, etc. The scarce to rare

coin market continues to perform well,

but record prices are still spotty. The

trend continues that many “fresh” coins

entering the market are consigned to auc-

tions rather than offered over the counter

to dealers first. For this reason the auc-

tion market is particularly healthy. Some

surprises are in the weakened market for

less than rare Morgan silver dollars, all

Buffalo nickels, and anything shy of rare

in the Indian cent field. The US Mint

is able to sell its non-circulating legal

tender commemoratives, but secondary

market price declines continue. Since

this is an entrance vehicle for beginners,

the poor performance of the secondary

market remains a serious concern.
