here are a number of problems that can
arise with the fuel gauge on a Bus, resulting
in inaccurate readings or no reading at
all. There are two main components that
contribute to ensuring the fuel gauge works. The first
is a voltage stabiliser, located behind the gauge, which
helps to maintain a steady voltage supply. This can
fail, resulting in inaccurate readings and eventually
no reading at all. The second is the fuel sender, which
sits in the top of the fuel tank. Unfortunately, on rear-

engine Buses, the fuel tank is forward of the engine, so
it’s hidden away and can only be accessed by removing
the engine. If you’re fortunate enough to have an access
panel to the top of the fuel tank, or know where to cut to
make one (don’t do this unless you know exactly where
it is and how to carefully cut through the panelwork,
but not the fuel tank), then there are a few checks that
can be conducted to test the fuel sender and the wires
connected to it. The following steps provide a general
guide, showing what’s involved.
