3: The copywriter
describes the
Pick-ups ‘wide
open floor’. Who
is Preis to argue!
4: Loads of
room yet full to

becomes ... or, and this is where
Preis’s mastery shines through, the
nearer it is the bigger it becomes ...
and that’s why the Pick-up’s f latbed
has pantechnicon attributes in the
artist’s world. It’s long and it’s wide
... a long wheelbase VW on offer 30
plus years ahead of its time!
However, Herr Preis is a believable
artist as his Kombi loaded with
innumerable boxes and five people
testifies, or his Pick-up being loaded
from a conveniently identical height
platform illustrates. That’s the
essence of the eye-catching cover of
this brochure ... all three workhorses
are on view, the diminutive stature
of the men pictured goes unnoticed,
while a glance at the foreground and
the Pick-up’s grandiose load area is
easily overlooked.
As for the rest of the brochure,
pages two and three feature
eight delightful thumbnail size

photographs of the workhorses in
action, while the old story of the
Delivery Van being ideal as a canvas
to advertise a business is re-hashed.
The reader is even advised that ‘if
you plan to use your own distinctive
color treatment, order your Panel
prime coated.’ Page three includes
a chart outlining daily production
of the ‘Truck’ at Hanover, showing,
as you would expect, a year-on-year
increase (30 in 1950 - 420 in 1958).
Unique to my copy (probably) the
dealer has stamped the brochure
with a few prices - take note: 211
Panel Del. Van $2142.48; 215 Panel
Del. Van Doos B/Sides $2222.48;
231M13 Combi w/Seats $2342.48;
261 M70 Pick Up Truck w/Tarp &
Bows $2142.48.’
Finally, a cost - as this brochure
remains relatively easy to get your
mitts on, notes totalling less than
£50 should suffice.
