territory whilst looking down at our feet and the surf.
There is no border fencing at the beach!
The days passed quickly by and we enjoyed the
restaurants in the villages, walking the dunes again,
cruising the lagoon in a sailboat and just soaking up the
scenery. During our stay, the BALTOP’s Nato exercise
was live, with a submarine and other naval ships
patrolling the sea border between Russia and Lithuania
just offshore and sending a chill down our spines.
We continued our voyage north, leaving the national
park, cutting through Klaipeda and along the A13 to
Palanga, another beautiful sea resort. We found a private
grass camping spot close to the Latvian border behind the
dunes and beside the Baltic cycle route. In the village we
bought the catch of the day that we washed down with
Jägershots and fell asleep listening to the waves on the
nearby shore.
Before the Baltics joined the EU, their coastline
was a military area, lined with Russian installations &
watchtowers and closed off to the general public. As
campers we benefitted from these secluded, undeveloped
coastal areas.
