Volkswagen Camper & Commercial – August 2019

(Kiana) #1
removed from the gearbox, the
problem was obvious, the hockey
stick had been bent and was not
selecting properly. At the same time
we checked the shaft for movement
and found that there was a lot of play
meaning the gearbox needed to be
assessed by a rebuilder. The gearbox
was sent away by the customer and
returned a month later ready for
us to try again. It appeared to be a
great improvement on the previous
one. The problems weren’t over
yet though, and when we fired up
the bus, the engines revs increased
when we tried to select a gear.
Another adjustment and it looked
to be cured at last. The amount of
time we spent resolving out these
multiple issues was frustrating and
costly for the customer, however it
illustrates that painting a gearbox in
shiny paint isn’t a rebuild!
Another issue we have had, is
with pop out frames being difficult
to fit and hard to open and close

  1. Seam sealing the
    joints before priming.

  2. Modifying the
    new dashboard to
    accept a deluxe
    clock and fuel gauge.

  3. The burnout box
    at Chimay in the
    sweltering heat!

  4. Roger Crawford,
    one of the ‘American
    Greats’ and the guy
    who dyno’d my race
    engine.

  5. The dashboard
    installed and in
    primer.

I sat with some guys who raced Bugs in
the 70’s and achieved 12 second passes
on engines built in their sheds!
