Volkswagen Camper & Commercial – August 2019

(Kiana) #1

when installed. We have tried a
few different ones and had similar
problems, so after measuring a NOS
frame and an original complete
window, we found that the new
frames are 5 mm too big. There was
also a problem with the seals and
glass which left a gap for water to
pass into the frame and then the
bus. We are addressing this with the
manufacturer at the moment and
hope that we will have a solution in
the near future.
Our second trip this month was
to our favourite European show,
the biannual that is Chimay or EBI.
This is an absolutely awesome show
that has a drag strip, traders, swap
meet, VIP food and drink area,
clean toilets, shower and awesome
weather. Too awesome this year
though, with Saturday temperatures
up into the 40s.

There is so much to do with open
houses, club parties, event dinners
and an invite only after show BBQ at
the chateau, where you can chat with
some of the legends of the drag scene
who fly in specially from the USA. I
sat with some guys that were racing
beetles in the 70’s and achieving 12
second passes on engines built in
their sheds. I also had the pleasure of
watching them driving some of those
same cars at Chimay nearly 50 years
later. If you haven’t been here, then
get it in your diary for 2021 and allow
an extra few days to get over it.
We were very kindly invited to
‘Flatline Lowriders’ & ‘Nostalgia cars’
open house and BBQ making this
a very hospitable start to the show,
great guys and a great welcome. What
a superb month we have had, a big
thanks to all of our friends, especially
the European & American ones.

  1. Anti-vibration
    pads are important
    on any build.

  2. A bent selector
    rod doesn’t help
    with slick shifting!

  3. Too hot outside,
    so a drink with Fred
    & Mónica in the VIP
    tent.

  4. Chimay
    souvenirs and
    more bands than
    Glastonbury.
