SARAH KARROW
Fifth-grade teacher
When she founded
the Eco Club a year
ago, Karrow thought
15 kids might show
up. Instead, she got
- With her help, the
students have built
a butterfly garden,
recycled 2,000 mark-
ers, raised money for
wildlife conservation,
and started Waste-Free
Wednesdays, when any
student who doesn’t
use disposable items
in the cafeteria can
enter a raffle for a
prize. Now, she says,
her pupils ask, “Mrs.
Karrow, do you have a
waste-free lunch?”

The words “student
council” too often
conjure scenes of popu-
larity-contest elections
that end with the losing
candidates crying in the
bathroom. Not on Kriz’s
watch. “Kids voting for
each other — that’s not
the message I want
to send.” Under her
advisership, any fifth
grader who wants in is
welcome. Council mem-
bers vote on projects
they’re interested in
supporting, like raising
funds for the Polycystic
Kidney Disease Found-
ation after a staff mem-
ber was diagnosed with
a kidney condition.
