JOVIANNE KATIE
OJEDA DEGILLO
Sophomore
After a classmate who
was struggling with
alcohol abuse got
suspended for drink-
ing in school, Degillo
worked with student
activist groups and
experts from Lurie
Children’s Hospital to
help create a new stu-
dent code of conduct,
recently adopted by
the school board, that
emphasizes support
over sanctions.
“I hope a lot of stu-
dents get the help
they deserve.”
JULIENNE AU
Math teacher
Au has led the school’s
math team to 10
straight citywide
championships. What
may be most remark-
able about this is
her effort to recruit
students who aren’t
natural math whizzes
but want an outlet for
strategic and creative
thinking. Au recalls a
sophomore who had
“zero experience” in
math competitions.
“He’s since become
one of our stars.”
Best Public Schools
With expanded lists for the city, as well as improved performance measures, this year’s rankings are
our most authoritative yet, honoring more than 200 elementary, middle, and high schools in the city and suburbs.
