KATHLEEN
MATTHES
Second-grade
teacher
Matthes had started
to notice signs of
stress among young
students. “Tests and
lockdown drills cause
anxiety, but 7-year-
olds haven’t learned
to calm it down.” So in
January she custom-
ized a yoga curriculum
that teaches kids to
cycle through poses
and meditate. Since
then, fights among
her pupils have all but
ceased. “They have
something they can
focus on to get their
mind off a problem.”

SHANA
PEARLMUTTER
Art teacher
The two have been
running the Legacy
Project, a program
that blends social
studies with visual art,
since 2007. It encour-
ages eighth graders
to create permanent
art installations that
express what they
see as their role and
responsibility in the life
of their community, the
country, and the world.
The goal is to create
engaged citizens.
“These kids are coming
out of my class real-
izing that their voice
matters,” says Barash.
